Gastrointestinal Cancer Program
Leading-edge GI Cancer Care for Patients Across Georgia and Beyond
Colorectal cancer remains a major public health concern in Georgia, with incidence and mortality similar to national rates overall but substantially higher in several rural and central regions. Multiple gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal, occur disproportionately in many southern states, driven in part by higher rates of preventable risk factors and ongoing barriers to screening and timely specialty care.
City of Hope® Cancer Center Atlanta offers patients in Georgia and the surrounding states with access to evidence-based care for a wide range of GI cancers, including colorectal cancer, liver and bile duct cancer, gastric cancer, pancreatic cancer and esophageal cancer.
Our Gastrointestinal Cancers Program is home to a multidisciplinary team of board-certified clinicians in the fields of gastroenterology, medical oncology, radiation and surgical oncology, interventional and diagnostic radiology, and supportive care. Our goal is to provide compassionate and personalized cancer care to every patient who is referred to us, founded on state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and innovative, comprehensive treatment options.
The City of Hope Atlanta team strives to offer a seamless experience for referring physicians and clinical providers. Once we receive a referral from you, our team begins processing it immediately and ensures smooth continuity of care for your patient.

Currently, there is an unmet need for therapy options for patients whose cancer has spread to the peritoneum, referred to as Peritoneal surface malignancies (PSM). The abdominal wall has a plasma barrier and fewer blood vessels, which can significantly limit the penetration and effectiveness of IV chemotherapy for PSM and malignant ascites. It is estimated that one-third of patients with gastric cancer and more than 60% of ovarian cancer patients have peritoneal metastases at some point.
To address this complex need, City of Hope Cancer Center Atlanta remains at the forefront of advanced PSM treatments, offering innovative therapies like hyperthermic (or heated) intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and pressurized intraperitoneal aerosolized chemotherapy (PIPAC) in conjunction with cytoreductive surgery (CRS). Supported by robust clinical research, these therapies exemplify City of Hope’s commitment to pioneering cancer care.
At City of Hope Atlanta, our physicians and clinical staff have decades of experience diagnosing and treating gastrointestinal cancers, including colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, liver cancer and bile duct cancer. We also offer treatment for advanced-stage and recurrent GI cancers.
